Quake 3 on Motorola Droid Looks Awesome [kwaak3 port of Quake 3 Comes to Android, Courtesy of Thunderbird2k]

If you were wondering just how great your Motorola Droid is, we have the answer, it’s awesome — or at least we think it’s awesome after seeing that you can play Quake 3 on it. Coming in from developer Thunderbird2k who spent a day compiling and loading the main function and a few more to get Open GL working, kwaak3 is a full port of Quake 3 to Android that allows you to play the awesome FPS game on your handset.

Quake 3 on DROID

From what we’re hearing your smartphone needs to run Android 1.6, and while there are no minimum requirements for RAM, the more memory you have, the smoother it runs, preventing the game from crashing. That’s why Motorola DROID sounds like a real good option to play Quake 3 on, as it looks like Thunderbird2k got the classic 3D title running at over 30fps on his device (using Open GL rendering, yes).

But as fun as it may sound, playing Quake 3 on your Android device is controlled using the keyboard, the touchscreen or the trackball — so may not be as easy as we thought. So how about hooking up a mouse to the DROID, that’d be a good start for a LAN party.
