Microsoft took some time today to remind users that they’re going to discontinue support for some older versions of their Windows operating system in the first half of the year. Targeted to not getting any security updates are Windows Vista SP0 from April 13th, while Windows XP SP2 and any version of Windows 2000 are being phased out starting July 13th.

“Back in October 2009 we talked about upcoming dates for end of support for certain Windows XP and Windows Vista versions. Those dates are getting closer and this is the time to remind customers running these versions that there is a need to take an action,” said Brandon LeBlanc, Microsoft’s in-house Windows blogger, in a post Wednesday.
So could it be a nice marketing move to get people to upgrade to Windows 7? LeBlanc added that “we recommend that those of you still on Windows XP SP2 install the latest service pack available via the Microsoft Update Web site—Windows XP Service Pack 3 — or look at moving to Windows 7.”
We’ll let you be the judge of that.
