Windows Phone 7 Series Coming in Three Chassis Versions Only?

Windows Phone 7 Series Handsets Reported to Use Chassis for Big Touchscreen Phones, Slide-Out Keyboard or Plain Candybar Device]

Windows Phone 7 Series was definitely the star of MWC 2010 but the first devices capable of actually running the new OS will arrive only later this year. We don’t have any idea who will launch the first Windows Phone 7 handset or how it will look like but it seems that there are only three chassis that will support the new OS.

Apparently Microsoft decided there are too many different phones running current Windows Mobile versions and the company doesn’t appreciate the fact that they come in all shapes and sizes. Therefore the phones running Windows Mobile 7 will only have three chassis available.

Chassis 1 is going to support big touchscreen phones. These devices will probably be similar to the HTC HD2 and they will sport large touchscreen, fast Snapdragon processors and dedicated graphics processors. As you can see these devices will be touch-only phones and they will be the first Windows Phone 7 handsets to arrive this holiday season.

Next up is Chassis 2 phones that are going to feature touchscreen displays and slide-out full QWERTY keyboards. Chassis 3 handsets will be candybar devices but we don’t have any more details about them at this point.

We do suspect that both Chassis 2 and 3 handsets will be compliant with Microsoft hardware requirements which means these devices should also be more than reliable smartphones. While Chassis 1 handsets will arrive at some point by the end of the year we have no idea when Chassis 2 and 3 devices will hit the market.

Now that MWC 2010 is gone we can only assume that Microsoft will share more light on its new Windows Phone 7 Series platform at CTIA and at the Mix 10 conference. After all we’re really interested to see how the new Windows Mobile 7 phone will look and feel like. The iPhone 4G is also coming out this year so Chassis 1-based Windows Phone 7 Series handsets should definitely be able to compete against it.
