Samsung Unveils HMX-U10 Pocket Camcorder [Mini-Camcorder Records in 1080p, HDMI, 3x Zoom]

At the PMA show earlier this week in California, Samsung showed off their latest entry in the pocket camcorder battle, and their entries, the HMX-U15 and -U20 are pretty strong. Both are discreet pocket camcorders that can record in full HD (1080p).

The HMX-series mini-camcorders from Samsung measure just 2.1″ x .61″ x 4.09″ in size and Samsung praises their “ergonomic” design that’s purportedly “easy to hold”. Samsung’s press release points out that the design has a 7-degree incline which reduces stress on the user’s wrist and arm. We’re not sure if that’s true or just a PR line, but it sounds good.

As aforementioned, both the -U15 and -U20 can record 1080p video at 30fps, which is encoded in H.264. The -U20 will offer a x3 optical zoom. The other difference between the two comes in their still image mode. The -U15 takes the equivalent of a 12-megapixel camera while the -U20 takes the equivalent of a 20-megapixel camera.

Other features of the camera include digital image stabilization as well as some time lapse features. For connectivity, it’s got a USB port for getting content onto a PC and a HDMI port for playing back HD video on a HDTV. Samsung has included a bundled “play-edit-share” software suite, dubbed intelli-studio that lets uses playback, edit and upload their video content. Uploading can be done to popular websites, like YouTube. It probably isn’t as good as some software that power users might know, but it’s a nice touch that Samsung included it.

The HMX-U15 will be shipping “this spring” for $230 while the HMX-U20 will come around the same time for $250.
