PlayStation Network Coming To Sony Ericsson Phones [Howard Stringer Reveals That PSN Is Expanding Across Product Lines, Including Mobile Phones]

Sir Howard Stringer, CEO and Chairman of Sony let it slip at the Mobile World Congress last week that Sony will be expanding the availability of Sony’s PSN (PlayStation Network) and that’ll even expand to Sony Ericsson mobile phones. This could be a reaction to Microsoft including Xbox Live on Windows Phone 7.

Sir Howard’s exact quote is:

“PSN is no secret weapon. Leveraging PSN we are building a new network service that will connect many more network enabled product including Sony Bravias, Viaos and Blu-ray players. To satisfy the demand for more open systems and to broaden the array of network devices connected to our network services we are committed to extending that service to Sony Ericsson mobile phones.”

We’ve seen PS3 Remote Play being offered on a few Sony Ericsson mobile phones before – the ability to play media content (and some games) stored on your PS3′S HDD on your phone or PSP. We’ve also seen the PlayStation 3′s XMB (Xross Media Bar) make its way onto Sony Bravia HDTVs, notebooks, Blu-Ray players and even digital cameras.

Earlier this month, we covered Qriocity, Sony’s VOD service that will run on XMB-enabled devices. It’s possible that it’s things like this that Sir Howard had in mind.

Of course, also at MWC, Microsoft showed off Windows Phone 7 which included some Xbox Live functionality. In addition to the remote play and Qriocity functionality, Sony could be planning to add things like the PSOne Classics and Qore to the other devices.
