Synology DiskStation NAS
The folks at Synology have unveiled a pair of powerful new NAS drives, one of which is aimed at home consumer use and the other is aimed at serious enterprise usage. They’re running Intel processors and embedded Linux operating systems for very fast performance.

Starting with the Synology DS1010+, which is the enterprise-grade NAS. It’s a five-bay expansion enclosure. It’s running an Intel Atom D510 processor, which is a overclocked variant of the popular N450 processor. It’s five-bays can hold either 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drives. It also can manage RAID levels 1, 2 or 6. On that back, it’s got an eSATA port if you need never more storage.
Speaking of ports, for connectivity, it can be networked with Ethernet or USB ports. It’s also DNLA complaint and comes with its own management software – DiskStation Manager, which can run in Windows, Mac or Linux. Synology says that this new enterprise NAS (aimed at medium-sized businesses) is x250 more powerful than previous iterations (thanks to the Atom) and also consumes only 68 watts of power.
The DiskStation DS110j is the consumer model. It’ll be running an unnamed (likely ARM-based) 800MHz processor. It will have a single drive-bay for a 2.5- or 3.5-inch SATA drive of your choosing. No RAID support on this consumer model. It’ll offer networking via Ethernet or USB.
You can expect the DS1010+ to start shipping in March, although pricing was unannounced (we speculate it’ll be near $1,000). The DS110j is now shipping for a respectable $150.
