Sprint Phones and the Android 2.1 Update [Sprint Phones Getting Multi-Touch Update Sometime Soon]
It’s no secret that this Android 2.1 update is being coveted by a lot of Android users, not only does it get you all the benefits of Android 2.0, but it also will enable multi-touch. Today, it’s being reported that Sprint (a Tier 1 telecom provider in the United States) is working hard with cell phone manufacturers to bring Android 2.1 to all of their Android devices.

As you may have heard, the Android 2.1 update has been a touchy issue where accidental postings keep giving away that the Motorola Droid will be getting the coveted Android 2.1 update sometime soon. A leaked report also showed that they’re planning to bring it to their other phones sometime soon.
Sprint currently offers two different Android phones, the HTC Hero and the Samsung Moment. Per a Twitter update from the official Sprint Twitter account, they’re preparing for the Android 2.1 update. The full Tweet is as follows:
Android update! Upgrades to 2.1 for Hero/Moment now expected early 2Q10. Currently working through options for upgrades w/ HTC and Samsung.
Sprint caught some heat earlier this year when they made owners of the Samsung Moment take their phones into a Sprint retail outlet to get a firmware update for Android 1.5 phones. Thankfully, this won’t be the case with the Android 2.1 update.
Blog AndroidAndMe contacted Sprint and found out that the telcom is only looking at two options for an update. Sprint’s communications team told AndroidAndMe, “Whether we will push these updates over-the-air or through a tethered PC client will be announced around release date.”
Android 2.1 updates are supposedly coming to T-Mobile and Verizon phones as well. For those out of the know, this excitement over the Android 2.1 update revolves around the enabling of multi-touch, among other things, like Google Maps Nav and other desired applications.
