Symbian^3 Arrives at MWC 2010; Symbian^3-Running Phones Coming This Year [Nokia & Symbian Announce Symbian^3 OS at MWC: New UI, Better Graphics & Multitouch]

Windows Phone 7 Series, a name which we’ll end up hating very soon, is not the only new OS demoed at MWC 2010. Nokia & Symbian have also tried to bring their A game to the show and they have announced a brand new Symbian version. We were expecting Symbian^3 to arrive soon and we shall see it in new smartphones by the end of the year.

Symbian3

One of the first things you have to know about the new OS is that it’s going to be completely open source which is not a bad move, is it? Symbian^3 is expected to be complete by the end of the first quarter of 2010 and it’s expected to bring some very hot features to the table: “significant usability and interface advantages”, faster networking, 2D and 3D graphics for games and apps , music store integration, HDMI support, multitouch and gesture control support, new, improved, feature-rich homescreen and multitasking.

I don’t know about you but it sounds pretty good to me. Just as Microsoft, Nokia needs this OS to be a winner. It will be interesting to see who will win the smartphone and featurephone battle as we have more and more candidates to the table. Apple, Google and RIM seem to be favorites for now but Microsoft, Nokia and Samsung are all pushing out new mobile operating systems. And let’s not forget that Palm is also out there working on its webOS.

Lee M. Williams, Executive Director of the Symbian Foundation said:

S^3 is another huge milestone in the evolution of our platform. Now that it is fully open source, the door is open to individual contributors, device creators and third-party developer companies, as well as other organizations, to create more compelling products and services than ever before. We have enjoyed significant momentum since we completed S^2, with companies including Sun, Nokia, Ixonos, Comarch and Accenture, among others, contributing to S^3. We are now looking to build on this momentum and remain on course to complete S^4 later this year.

We’ll be looking forward to see Symbian^3 and Symbian^4 get launched later and until then we’ll have plenty of time to choose our next smartphone. Any favorites?
