Samsung i8520 Revealed

New Smartphone Dubbed "Halo" brings Super OLED Screen, 8-megapixel camera, pico-projector, Android 2.1

Samsung’s first big revelation for the 2010 Mobile World Congress might have been leaked early but the i8520 “Halo” was pretty much a new treat from the South Korean tech giant. The phone looks to be a high-end smartphone device, perhaps a compliment to the Wave.

While the Wave will be running Samsung’s own Bada mobile OS, Samsung confirmed to press on the MWC show floor that the Halo will in fact, be running Android 2.1 This is after some confusion, as the press shots for the Halo showed Bada running on the new mobile handset. Samsung hasn’t confirmed if the Halo will include the dreadful TouchWiz UI interface.

No word on what processor will be running the Halo. Speculation has it that it’ll have the same 1GHz Samsung that powers the Wave. It’ll have 384MB of RAM, as well as 16.5GB of flash storage. It’ll also feature a large 3.7-inch touchscreen, which again, Samsung is calling “Super AMOLED”. No word if this is just a marketing line or if the display has some advantages over existing OLED displays.

It’ll have a 8-megapixel camera with flash, which is a bit more than we see on most mobile phones. It’ll also have a DLP pico-projector. Press at the show are reporting that Texas Instruments (the company behind the DLP projector technology) has a big presence at MWC this year and they’re pushing pico-projectors for mobile phones. The projector on the Samsung Halo can purportedly get up to 50-inches in screen size.

The Halo will run on GSM bands and will support 3G connectivity. It’s headed to Asia and Europe in Q3 2010, with a US release maybe coming later. No word on price or carriers yet – I’d imagine that’s still being negotiated.
