More Information on Motorola Android Updates Revealed

Leak Shows Droid 2.1 update coming soon, CLIQ, Dext and Milestone getting updates too, maybe

The Android 2.1 update that enabled multi-touch on Android devices was a pretty exciting update when the Nexus One received it. Google announced it would be up to each carrier and phone manufacturer to decide if their specific phones will receive the 2.1 update. News about Motorola phones and the mystical 2.1 update has been a long tale, to say the least.

The Motorola Droid was probably generally considered by most to the best Android phone, before the launch of the Nexus One (which sources inside Google called Google’s attempt at a ‘perfect Android phone’), so Droid owners have been interested in the 2.1 update.

First, reports emerged that Motorola and Verizon had the 2.1 update and were testing it before sending it out to US Motorola Droid users. Rumor had it that the update would be rolled out within a week (it’s a week from those rumors today, for those playing along at home). Then, a Motorola forum admin accidentally posted the patch notes for the Android 2.1 update on the support forum, only to pull the back suddenly with the weak explanation that he “jumped the gun”.

So, Droid users are still left without any timing on the Android 2.1 update. We know it’s coming, since Motorola staff at least have the patch notes handy. Today on their support page (and why this is getting a post on the topic) Motorola posted a “Software Upgrade News” chart for a few others that detailed the Android 2.1 update for various Android Motorola phones, including the Droid, CLIQ, Milestone and Dext.

The interesting thing, the web page displaying the chart itself was pulled by zealous Motorola staff itself a few hours after being up on the internet. Here are the contents of the chart:

  • The Motorola Droid will be getting the update “soon”.
  • The Motorola Milestone will get the 2.1 update in Q1 2010 in Europe only, other regions are ‘being evaluated’.
  • The Motorola CLIQ will be getting the update in Q2 2010.
  • The Motorola Dext will be getting the 2.1 update in South America and Asia. An update for Euorpean Dext phones is being evaluated.

So, Droid owners aren’t any closer to knowing when they’ll get their update, but Cliq owners and other phone owners who live in the regions listed can be glad that they are in fact, getting the desired 2.1 update with multi-touch.
