Intel To Introduce New Quad-Core Processor [New Core i7-880 Based On Lynnfield, 45nm Die, 3.06GHz Clockspeed]

Reports have hit the internet today that Intel is preparing another SKU of it’s popular line of Core i7 processors. The new chip, which will be dubbed the Core i7-880, will be based off the quad-core Lynnfield processors. Judging by the clockspeed and naming convention, the new -880 will take a place in the high-mid-range of Intel’s offerings.

Computer hardware site Fudzilla is reporting that the Core i7-880 will be based on the 45nm Lynnfield chips, despite Intel’s new excitement over their new 32nm manufacturing process. Lynnfield, currently consisting of three Core i7 chips at different clockspeeds, was first unveiled last September, with another iteration added at CES in January, and now this fourth addition.

The i7-880 will have a clockspeed of 3.06GHz, putting it among the fastest Core i7 processors that Intel has for sale. With Intel’s Power Boost technology, it can be overclocked to 3.73GHz. It’ll pack four cores and 8 hyperthreading treads.

The processor will run on the LGA 1156 socket. Per Fudzilla, it will have improved memory capability and will be able to support DDR3 speeds of either 1333 or 1066. It’ll have a steep TDP of 95W.

Reports have these new i7-880 chips dropping in Q2 or Q3 of 2010. No word on the pricing, but we expect these chips to go easily in excess of $600, based on the pricing of the current i7-8xx line and where it looks like this one will fall into place.
