LG Planning To Introduce eReader [LG Vice President Promises It Will "Compete With Amazon and Apple", Maybe Coming In April]

LG is planning to go head to head with Amazon and Apple in the eReader space, or at least they will in the Middle East and African markets. KW Kim, head of LG’s Middle East and African operations, told an United Arab Emirates business website that the tech giant is going to compete with an eReader.

The exact quote, given to the website from Kim is, “We will soon launch a new product, maybe by April. It will compete with Apple and Amazon.” The implication is that they’re going to be producing a new eReader. The iPad could be taken several different ways, but Amazon really only produces one tangible tech gadget, and that’s the Kindle.

We’ve seen a ton of eReaders in the last six months, most of them out of China or from small startups. Currently, the Amazon Kindle, Sony Reader and B&N Nook have the most mindshare, but Samsung also has a strong new line of eReaders, and the Apple iPad could be a strong competitor. Hopefully, LG can find a way to stand in with these devices and above the ‘lower class’ of eReaders that’s flooded with Chinese clones and overpriced startups.

In addition to their (now rumored) eReader, Kim said that LG is working on a new series of netbooks that will be sold with a 3G modem. Kind of like a certain trademarked word that combines smartphone and netbook. In the Middle East, LG will be selling these netbooks with a contract from local telcom Etisalat. Kim also confirmed that LG is making the flat panels that are in the Apple iPad.
