Windows Phone 7 Confirmed for the MWC

Microsoft to Unveil Windows Mobile 7 at MWC 2010; so Says the WSJ

By now we all pretty much suspect that Redmond wants to make an impression at the Mobile World Congress this year. The company simply has to reveal Windows Mobile 7 right, although it was rumored before that Microsoft’s latest mobile platform will only arrive in 2011, in order not to lose even more market share to old rivals like RIM, Motorola or Nokia and, more importantly to new rivals like Apple and Google.

We already talked about Windows Mobile 7 extensively here on TFTS and today we have more updates for you. It looks like the Windows Phone 7 or Windows Mobile 7 smartphone, or whatever they will like to call it, has been confirmed for MWC 2010.

Steve Ballmer will present himself the new mobile OS and possibly the first Microsoft-made smartphone during an event taking place on February 15 from 3 PM, local time. The Wall Street Journal has apparently been able to confirm everything so all we need to do right now is sit tight and wait for the whole show to begin.

We already know that Windows Mobile 7 will come with a brand new user interface and it will have Zune-like features. But we’re still missing any screen shots to prove everything. Apparently Microsoft managed not to have anything leaked before MWC which is quite remarkable.

The WSJ goes on to say that Redmond will work closely with manufacturers in order to “limit the wild variation in quality of Windows phones and to make It easier for independent application developers to write software that runs well on them.” In other words Microsoft will want to make sure that its minimum hardware requirements are met by manufacturers in order for consumers to have a great Windows Mobile 7 experience.

Make sure you follow us on Monday, February 15, in order to get all the scoop on Windows Mobile 7 and Windows Phone 7.

From what we know so far it looks like Windows Mobile 7 will require new hardware. The only handset that might get it though is the HTC HD2 although that’s not confirmed either. We’ll have more details for you on Monday.
