Palm Stops Palm Pre, Palm Pre Plus, Palm Pixi & Palm Pixi Plus Production?

Palm Is Said to Resume Pre & Pixi Production Only in March

Only yesterday we found out that AT&T and Palm are getting ready to launch a GSM version of the Pre on May 10 and today we have more Palm-related news for you. But this time it’s not good news, folks! In fact, if you want to buy a Palm Pre, Pre Plus, Pixi or Pixi Plus, maybe now is the time to buy it as people say that Palm is halting all webOS phones production.

What’s pretty clear so far is that Palm will completely stop Pre and Palm Pre production and shipments. Some sources claim that Pixi and Pixi Plus production will also be stopped while others say that Pixi Plus production will keep going although Verizon will only get 5,000 units in February.

The good news is that February is the shortest month of the year and we only have just a little over two weeks to go until March.

The question is why would Palm go ahead and do such a thing? What’s going to happen next? While we expect an official statement coming from Palm or Foxconn, here’s what we have so far on the matter:

Palm Inc. Alert
Palm Orders Production Halt of Pre and Pre+ in February
February 11, 2010

PALM, S, VZ, 2038 HK, 8078 TT

Sources: 3 sources Taiwan handset component supply chain (all repeats)

Key sources in the Taiwan handset supply chain said Palm Inc. has ordered assembler Foxconn International Holdings Co. Ltd. to suspend production of both the Pre and Pre+ in February. “The decision is very sudden, and Foxconn was told to reduce all February Pre forecast to zero on Wednesday and nobody knows whether shipment will resume in March,” said a key source. The source said the CDMA2000 Pre to Sprint and the CDMA2000 Pre+ to Verizon were affected.

Pixi Production Suspended Too?
One source said Palm also told Compal Communications Inc. to suspend shipment of the Pixi and Pixi+ in February, while another source said that production is still going ahead with the Pixi+ to Verizon, but actual delivery in February will amount to less than 5,000 units.

Here’s the official statement from Palm

Palm regularly adjusts its product manufacturing levels to manage inventory. In anticipation of the Verizon Wireless launch and Chinese New Year, we increased production levels prior to February, and anticipate ramping production back up after the Chinese New Year ends.

Debunk: Palm not halting Pre / Pixi production, just on hold for Chinese New Year
Oh boy. Research firm OTR Global is making some waves today with a report claiming that Palm ordered all Pre and Pixi manufacturing to be halted, but apparently they didn’t look at a calendar — or, you know, call Palm. We just talked to Palm and here’s the real deal: Pre and Pixi orders were halted for the Chinese New Year on the 14th, and production will go back online at the end of the month. That’s the whole story — Palm also told us that production for Verizon was ramped up early in the year to cover the downtime, so there shouldn’t be any effect on availability. We’ll be getting an official statement soon, we’ll update as soon as we get it.
