With the success of Avatar in movie theaters, 3D is seeing a huge surge in popularity and it was just a matter of time before 3D recording devices were out in consumer devices. Little known pocketcam maker DXG has brought you one of the first consumer 3D devices, and certainly the smallest.

DXG Pocket 3D Camcorder

The aptly named DXG 3D Camcorder is pretty simple. It’s a pocket camcorder with a pistol-grip and 3-inch LCD viewer. It has two lens on the front that will record 3D video for you. Unfortunately, it’ll only shoot standard def 3D, so don’t expect to win an Oscar with any of your new 3D video.

The whole thing will cost you $400, but there is a catch. The 3D video is recorded in the “Motion JPEG” file format. M-JPEG is sort of a strange file format and so it’s unlikely that you’ll find a way to play it back on a decent-sized TV. Don’t worry, DXG knows that M-JPEG is rare so they’ve included a 7-inch digital picture frame that will play back your 3D movies.

You’ve got to wonder how great the 3D effect is, considering the two lens are so close together. The standard def M-JPEG video probably doesn’t look great either. Overall, the whole thing is a little sketchy but, it is a cheap consumer 3D camcorder, and we haven’t seen a ton of those, yet.

DXG is asking $400 for the pocket camcorder and the enclosed digital picture frame that’ll play back your M-JPEG 3D videos.
