Folks from Opera are begging for some media attention at this year’s Mobile World Congress that will kick in next week in Barcelona, and by the looks of it, they’ve done a great job stirring things up after officially announcing that they’ll be unveiling an Opera Mini browser for the iPhone. But could it be just a publicity stunt?

Basically, Opera expects Apple to approve their iPhone browser application although they haven’t submitted it yet, but if that won’t happen, there’s no harm done as the company is actually looking at promoting their Opera Mini browser for smartphones during the 2010 MWC, as they’re not after the iPhone in particular — which leads us thinking they’re doing it so that the press picks it up.
It would be nice to see if Apple is going to give it a green light as Opera believes that their new iPhone browser will use much less bandwidth (up to 90% less) by using an advanced compression technology and should be up to six times faster than the smartphone’s native browser.
I would download it for my smartphone if I wanted to pay less on data, but would those real Apple users give up what they have to go with Opera? That remains to be seen next week in Barcelona, when Opera will actually have to prove that their Mini browser for the iPhone is way superior to what we’re getting now.
