Just a few days ago we told you how certain analysts suggested that the iPad could come with a cheaper price tag should demand not satisfy Apple’s expectations. While we’re waiting to see how well the iPad will perform before Cupertino starts slashing prices we need more reasons for Apple to sell its tablet for less.

We already have reasons not to buy the first-gen iPad but the beast is still pretty affordable. So what if there was another affordable tablet out there capable to successfully fight the iPad? What if there was an iPad-like device that would come with multitasking, Flash support, a webcam and a bunch of extra ports? What if such a device would be named the Asus Eee Pad and would cost under $500? Would that be enough for Apple to cut iPad prices?
We are just speculating at this point but we might just see Asus launch its own tablet, the Eee Pad, powered by those impressive Tegra 2 chipsets coming from NVIDIA. The device was briefly shown at CES 2010 but now that Apple has fully disclosed the iPad’s features and specs Asus should have a better idea of what the competition is offering and what consumers really want.
The company has already declared that a “killer product” is coming in June and that, among other things, Asustek is “aiming to become another Apple.” The hot new product which we shall refer to as the Eee Pad from now on, is expected to arrive after Asus finalizes the spin-off of its Pegatron Technology “manufacturing arm.” The move should be completed by June 1 and Asustek and Pegatron will ought to be listed synchronously on June 24.
Should Apple be worried? We’d like them to be, but that’s hardly the case, at least for now. Cupertino can deal with some of our complaints once iPhone OS 4.0 sets in. The new OS is rumored to finally offer some sort of multitasking support which could certainly convince more people to get the iPad. And let’s not forget that Apple will be experimenting with iPad sales for at least three months before the actual Eee Pad hits the market. After all we do remember how late the Eee Keyboard arrived, don’t we? The same thing might happen with the Eee Pad in which case Cupertino will have plenty of time to sell lots of tablets.
