Samsung Transparent OLED Laptop Coming Soon? [14-In Transparent Display to Fit Samsung Notebooks Within The Year?]

Samsung might be the first company to launch a laptop fitted with a transparent OLED display. Is that the direction we’re heading? Do we really need to see what’s behind the screen at all times? Do we want to let others see what we’re working on?

The 14-inch laptop in the picture here was shown at CES 2010 and it’s definitely a very interesting use of modern technology. We don’t have all the specs and features of this prototype just yet but one can only assume that such a laptop will be ready to offer us the performance we expect from a machine that size. That translucent OLED screen just won’t be enough to make us buy the notebook should the specs not meet our requirement.

The laptop in question might enter production within the next 12 months so we should see it in stores, or better yet, see through it in stores at some point next spring.

Samsung seems really interested in this whole translucent display business. The first unit sporting such technology is the IceTouch YP-H1 MP3 player. The device has a transparent AMOLED display and it’s able to play all your music, but also doubles as a radio or a DVD player. The device will be available in the following months and will cost you around 240 which seems a little expensive for a MP3 player.

The 14-inch laptop is currently being developed in Korea and it’s going to be the first laptop in the world to sport a transparent OLED screen. Sooner or later the competition will also launch similar products and therefore Samsung wants to be the first in this market. If everything proves successful we might see similar displays equipping other Samsung creations, including phones.

Speaking of phones we will remind you that there is handset that comes with a translucent display, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Pureness, although it’s not a smartphone filled with lots of features. And that display is a transparent monochrome TFT screen so it might be a while until we see a transparent OLED/AMOLED panel equip a smartphone.

Anyone interested in laptops with transparent displays?
