Nexus One Sold Just 80,000 Units in The Last Month [Google's Self-Branded Mobile Device Selling Sluggishly]

According to reports, Google’s Nexus One Android-powered smartphone hasn’t been the market success Google had hoped.  The Google Nexus One has apparently only sold 80,000 units in the last month, a stark contrast to the early sales numbers of the popular Motorola Droid and the Apple iPhone.

Last year, the Motorola Droid smartphone sold 525,000 units in the same period, and it took Apple only 76 days to reach 1,000,000 users of its Apple iPhone after launch.  The HTC-sourced Google Nexus One doesn’t have any glaring feature weaknesses, using the latest version of Android and even featuring multi-touch after a recent update.  The concerns about the Google Nexus One may have more to do with the product’s network options than the actual product itself.

Upon their launches, the Apple iPhone and the Motorola Droid were available on the nation’s two largest carriers at subsidized prices, on AT&T and Verizon, respectively.  The Google Nexus One is available on a smaller network, T-Mobile, and can only be purchased through Google’s Nexus One website.  The lack of a brick-and-mortar presence and the inability to order directly through a carrier’s website or phone service may have been the key factor in the poor sales for the Nexus One.  While Google’s expertise has always been about web services, the launch of their first hardware product apparently could have used some good old fashioned brick-and-mortar know-how.
