Nokia Symbian v3 Phones Coming in Q3 2010; Symbian v4 Arriving Too

New Nokia Smartphones to Run Symbian v3 & v4 by the End of the Year

Nokia, currently the number one cell phone manufacturer out there seems to be ready to finally offer us some new Symbian OS version. The Finnish company could use some fresh OS capable of handling the competition better than what it currently has in store.

Furthermore we’re expecting Nokia to announce hot new handsets this year that could face the competition. Nokia’s N97 failed to impress although it had some more than decent specs and features. We’re looking for a new flagship phone and we expect it to run an upgraded version of Symbian.

While the Ovi Orion concept phone we’ve seen yesterday is still just a well rendered design, Nokia should finally come up with a better smartphone experience for us all. But in order to achieve that it needs to rethink its entire mobile platform.

According to recent information it looks like Nokia is trying to speed up the whole Symbian development. After all, Nokia happens to own Symbian and it should be able to make any modifications to its roadmap. Therefore it would seem that Symbian v2 is already being ditched and Nokia is moving to Symbian v3.

The new OS should be available in the third quarter of the year and it’s said to feature multitouch support among other things. Version 4 should follow in late 2010 or early 2011 which means that Santa could be delivering some very interesting Nokia handsets this year. Michael Hsu, general manager of Nokia Taiwan had this to say about Symbian v4:

The Symbian version 4 is believed to be based on the Qt cross-platform application development framework developed by Trolltech, which Nokia acquired in June 2008, said industry sources. The Qt will allow software developers to develop application software supporting Symbian and Maemo platforms simultaneously, added the sources.

Nokia will keep selling Symbian S60 and S40 devices but prices are said to become more competitive in 2010. Maemo 6 products are also expected to arrive in the second quarter of the year so it appears that Nokia is getting ready for an interesting year. All we need now are some new Symbian v3 to look at, wouldn’t you agree?
