Nokia N97 Getting Ovi Maps Support [Ovi Maps Support Coming to Your Nokia N97]

Last week we delivered more bad news to those GPS software developers scared that Google will put them out of business with their free Google Maps application, by announcing that Nokia is preparing to update all their GPS-enabled smartphones with a new version of Ovi Maps that would bring free walk and drive navigation for life. So it happened, and select S60 users already got the new application up and running, with Nokia N97 mobiles getting it, too, starting today.

Officially announced on the Nokia Conversations blog, if you’re running N97 software version 2.0.x the new version of the Ovi Maps is available by navigating to the software update client in the applications folder, where you select it from the list.

It’s nice to know that the Finnish manufacturer will offer the new service (car and pedestrian navigation along with turn-by-turn voice guidance) in 74 countries around the world, with only 10 being lucky enough to get traffic information. Another interesting thing is the fact that 180 countries will be getting detailed maps, high-end walk and drive navigatio, along with access to Lonely Planet and Michelin travel guides.

The company has announced that “We expect to have news on other devices over the coming weeks, so stay tuned if yours doesn’t yet support the all new Ovi Maps.”

Note: if you don’t know what OS you’re running, type *#0000# and update to 2.0.x  (if needed) to be eligible for the new Ovi Maps.
