Apple iPad Goes to AT&T, Verizon Nowhere to be Seen
Some of the rumors we went through these last couple of months became true tonight while others failed to be materialized just yet. One of those rumors did not unfortunately get confirmed tonight and I am talking about Verizon’s involvement in the iPad.

While Steve Jobs announced to the world Apple’s breakthrough deal with AT&T everyone must have been asking themselves: “Uhm, so where is Verizon exactly?” Big Red was said to sell the iPad for a while now but Steve Jobs only announced a GSM version of the device today. And its long-time partner, AT&T, is going to profit again from a very hot Apple device.
It just may be that Apple is not ready to launch a CDMA version of the iPad. Or maybe Apple is just waiting for AT&T’s time to run out. AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity deal should expire this summer, just before the next-gen iPhone gets launched. Should we assume that only then will Steve Jobs announce the CDMA iPhone, and, following it, the CDMA iPad?
What do you guys think? Is AT&T really ready to handle all that traffic that’s about to hit them from iPad users? What about you Verizon? Can you hear us now?

Two things i have heard but no one wants to report it because its not a story if you just explain why att will stay apples partner for awile. 1. rumors that steve jobs has told at&t higer ups that he would never make a cdma iphone. It would be counter productive with LTE coming around the corner. 2. Apples deal with at&t may have a clause in it that states they can not start developing a cdma or lte version until thier deal with at&t has run its course. SO this is my prediction: Verizon will not see an Iphone until 2012 and they will be going through LTE growing pains and at&t will have sured up thier network to take control of the market.
I really think its rediculous all the flack that att is getting. I mean, think about it, roughly half thier customers are using an iphone. Verizon doesnt have anything that is remotely close to the success of that product. If they did, they would be having “coverage” problems also. I mean, everyone has it because its the best, and att as a good company should is doing everything that they can to keep on top of the demand, but not since the moto razr has there been this much hype about a cell phone. Also, I am glad verizon didnt get the ipad. If you ask me, its just plain stupid to go with verizon for any of their products as verizon is basically a niche techknowlegy. They are the only company that really uses that style of network, additionally, the world uses GSM. So why in the world would they make only cdma version, or even offer it when it is basically a drop in a bucket when it comes to the amount of people that use gsm vs. cdma. Doesnt make sense at all for apple to launch on verizon. Att may lose exclusivity, but I highly doubt they will stop carrying the iphone. Would not make good business sense for anyone. I have an iphone, and I drop calls here and there, and some times my email doesnt work, but for all the joy, and benifits I get out of it most of the time, the occassional bad coverage or whatever is worth it. You gotta think, tons and tons and tons of people have the phone, and are benifiting from it every day like I am, so its like a log jam effect. some will get through, others wont, but it still makes progress. Anyway, I have rambled enough, and I will just leave you with…AM I THE ONLY ONE OUT THERE THAT ACTUALLY LIKES ATT, AND HATES VERIZON!? What a smug company verizon is…they cant even do voice over data at the same time. bunch a chumps if you ask me. yeah, you may cover a percent better overall coverage, but your network cant do anything with itself. anyway, att is getting an android phone soon also, so bye bye ace in the hole at verizon!
If iPad and/or iPhone doesn’t come to Verizon, then I will not switch to ATT and will continue to wait till it does. There is NO WAY I will ever switch to ATT.
The AT&T plan for the iPad does NOT require a contract so you really aren’t switching providers. Also, Apple cannot discuss Verizon as a provider while still under contract with AT&T. That’s business ethics 101. I’m sure they will discuss once exclusivity expires.
Will you be able to use Verizon air card? loading the soft ware should be no problem and it has a usb port?
No one seems to want to say that Verizon has not taken on the IPad because their network does not have the capacity. Their Map commercials tout 5 times the 3G coverage, but 3G is not a specific transport protocol technology, it is a “term” used to describe the generation of GSM, or CDMA used by a carrier.
How come I cannot talk and search the web simultaneously on the Droid? Why does the network not allow the throughput necessary to do something so straightforward? The Droid multitasks, but the network doesn’t.
AT&T should not be beat up so badly – Apple certainly had no need to do any exclusive partnership with any single carrier – Where is T-Mobile? Where is Sprint with their “4G”? They are lowball pricers? why didn’t they jump into the 14.99 or 29.99 data plan action? Do you think their networks have anything to do with it?
I doubt Apple’s exclusivity deal with AT&T involved a product 3 years from introduction. It’s much more likely that (like 3 years ago) AT&T was the company willing to step up to the plate with their deal, while Verizon decided to take a pass (again).
Also, I don’t have an iPhone but I have AT&T and I never have any problems. Their network is clearly more advanced. I fail to see how Verizon providing their version of 3G to North Dakota or the Nevada desert is supposed to impress me, who the heck needs 3G there?
I cover telecom, so here it goes…AT&T will continue to have issues with data capacity as they have only deployed HUDSPA on major metropolitan areas in the US, everywhere else gets EDGE (comparable to Verizon’s 1X). When Verizon first introduced EVDO (1st Gen 3G) they chose to have separate carriers on each tower they installed, the 1X carrier antenna (Verizon’s 2G) would support voice traffic and the EVDO (now updated to EVDO Rev A) would support the data traffic. This is the reason for both Verizon’s criticism and their success, data traffic does not hinder their voice capacity. On the flip side there are two different technologies working on every tower, one for voice and one for data, hence Verizon’s inability to support simultaneous voice and data transmission.
From an unbiased, yet educated in telecom, opinion AT&T is going to continue to have problems well into their 4G roll out. That will be the point where the 2 companies can not haggle with one another about who chose the correct technology as Europe’s Vodaphone, Verizon and AT&T (the 3 largest wireless carriers in the world) have all chosen LTE as the next generation of wireless and every other major carrier in the world has followed suit. The investment that Verizon made in 4G 700 Mhz spectrum was $9 billion vs. AT&T’s $2 billion in the higher frequency spectrum with less in building reach, and again, only in metropolitan areas.
Apple would be foolish to not partner with Verizon as soon as their contractual obligations expire not only for network reasons, but also for the 91 million customers that they will get access to by partnering with the worlds largest cellular provider, and I’m not the only one who thinks so, watch Apple’s stock when a telecom analyst from a major brokerage reports that Verizon and Apple can’t come to an agreement…Steve Jobs is no fool and will not make a business decision that will put Apple in a competitive disadvantage if not contractually bound. I for one wish all carriers had the iPhone, iPad, etc. so that it would breed greater competition and ultimately lower prices for the consumer.
Rev A: 3.1 Mbps download, 1.8 Mbps upload
HSDPA: 3.6 Mbps dowload, 1.2 Mbps upload
That is your speed difference…that AT&T is talking about.
Verizon uses Rev A speeds …the RED map we are talking about. Not that blue one that AT&T has with thier HSDPA. when comparing the two products…its a no brainer, a 16% speed increase for a 450% decrease in coverage?
Now LTE coming late 2010. Verizon will have Iphone and Ipad. You can bet your sweet ass on it. Why in the hell would Steve Jobs not want to increase his user base by 91.6 million potential customers? lawl to anyone that thinks Verizon won’t get these devices.
@Jizm – Being an attorney I can most definitely say you are 100% correct. Apple will not mention Verizon until contractually free to do so.
TO Matt’s data point
Rev A: 3.1 Mbps download, 1.8 Mbps upload
HSDPA: 3.6 Mbps dowload, 1.2 Mbps upload
These are peak theoretical speeds
Secondly, the GSM 3G for Data is now 7.2Mpbs, and the next iteration before needing GSM LTE 4G, would be 22Mbps.
Recompute your speed delta with these numbers, and also consider the switch over and fallback issue that are non existant for GSM from 2G all the way to 4G. Verizon 3G EVDO to LTE 4G will be ugly handoff between competing technology deployments.
Verizon LTE won’t be significantly available, with serious costs for deployments, even while Verizon reported bad economics (no cash) against AT&T who has alot cash. No wonder why Verizon wants $350.00 for an ETF, it’s an easy way to get a loan when you need to lock people down for 2 years before the playing field is even by technology.
Should be interesting, but as a betting person, I’d put my money on the 2nd place pony, rather than the lead horse trying to learn a new trick. In the end, the race has no finish line.
Unless there is an acquisition, I predict AT&T will have the fastest network for the new few years, and will overtake subscribers to be the largest network during the mid to last half of this year. Won’t that be a kick in the head to Verizon!
They’ll have the biggest 3G map, all with users with Tracphones for voice.
“There’s an app for that”, turned into “there’s a map for that” to “Good luck with that”
The Apple iPhone, iPad and next up the Android for the trifecta of offerings.
It’s bound to be an awesome year at AT&T, and I would want to be Verizon. In the lead, and hearing footsteps!
GSM > CDMA
Heres an idea, lets build a network EVERYWHERE in the US that is a completely different technology than the rest of the world. Verizon is a good company with a good business model, but it appears they have painted themselves into a corner so to speak. The countries that produce our cellphones all use GSM, the phones have to be custom made to even work on Verizon’s network. That means at&t has a much brighter future just from a numbers standpoint alone. Sure BetaMax may have had a couple of advantages over VHS, but we see who won that battle. VHS was just more widely available.
I’ll take my Government recommended absorbtion rate of magnetic radiation from a radio type that is used in every country in the world, not one that is used by companies just in the US.
Maybe its a conspiracy by Verizon owner Vodafone to sabatoge the US telecomunications industry by building a company that from the ground up is different from the rest of the planet.
I do work for att, but the company takes care of its employees and is actually owned and operated in the states.
