Brightcove Bringing IPTV Content To Yahoo TVs

Brightcove Video Content, Killer App For The Widget-Based TV Intergration?

Brightcove, the digital media platform, announced a partnership at CES that would bring their internet IPTV content to Yahoo Connected TVs. A “Yahoo Connected TV” for the uninformed, is feature on some flat-panel TVs from a few manufacturers that contains integrated widgets like you’d find on your desktop.

Reviewers gave a mediocre response to the widgets-on-TV technology, but Yahoo may have found another use for their technology. Because of the Internet integration required for the Yahoo Connected TV technology, one assumes that it was easier for Brightcove to port their platform.

So now, users with Yahoo Connected TVs will get, in addition to stock quotes, weather and Facebook updates on the bottom of their screen – online video content. Brightcove, like Boxee, Roku, all the video online content providers, has a wide selection of channels with a variety of quality.

It’s worth noting that the Brightcove platform will be running as a separate widget within the Yahoo Connected TV framework, not a separate service. Yahoo currently offers streaming movies from Amazon’s Video On Demand service and Blockbuster, but both of those are paid services vs. the free content of Brightcove.

Video widgets could quickly become the killer app of the Yahoo Connected TV marketplace, as most opinions on the internet seem to be cool to the idea of the Facebook, eBay and Twitter widgets on your televisions. No word on when Bluecove will bring their content to the Yahoo Connected TV market, Amazon and Blockbuster are already out on the service.
