Nintendo Wii to Support Netflix in the Near Future [New Netflix Service for Video Streaming to be Announced Soon]

A new NY Times comes through with more details about the upcoming Wii Netflix support. Just yesterday we told you that Netflix’ CEO has confirmed that Netflix video streaming is heading to the Wii and today we can further elaborate on that.
It looks like Nintendo will add a new Netflix online streaming video service to its Wii which means you’ll be able to use your favorite console in the world to stream your favorite movie titles.
The new service should let subscribers browse through a Netflix catalog of “generally older movies and television shows” and watch them instantly on their Wii-connected HDTVs. Well maybe the newest titles won’t be available just yet to Wii users but Netflix will surely increase its inventory in the following months.
According to the NYT it looks like Nintendo is in favor of this new approach regarding its Wii business as the gaming industry is threatened by a new trend. Besides your regular “prepackaged $69 video games” one can choose free games on social networks or play games on smarter and smarted phones thus ignoring the Wii, or the Xbox and PS3 for that matter.
After all, who needs a Wii if one is not purchasing as many games? But if the Wii and its successors will have Netflix support and will add even more services capable of streaming multimedia content then people will have new reasons to hang on to their Wiis and purchase the following versions of it.
Nintendo’s Wii is currently behind the Xbox 360 and the PS3 when it comes to multimedia content. Both Microsoft and Sony already support multimedia content including Netflix online video streaming service so it’s understandable why Nintendo would also want in.
Just like with PS3 owners, Wii owners will have to order a software disc and have it in the console at all times when watching a movie from Netflix through the online streaming service. But that’s a small price to pay for streaming online videos, isn’t it?
So good news, Wii fans, you won’t have to ditch your consoles anytime soon as Netflix support is just around the corner. Although you might consider switching to PS3 or Xbox 360 once their motion controlled gaming gets launched later this year.
