Right after learning that Skype got to the next level by announcing that their latest application will bring 720p HD video calls to the masses, here comes something that will totally blow you away; ESPN is all set to take sports broadcasting to a “whole new dimension” as the company is launching the industry’s first 3D television network, starting with a World Cup soccer match featuring South Africa vs. Mexico, in June.

After experimenting with 3D for more than two years now, ESPN 3D is making a big bet that 2010 will be the year of 3D (other than being the year of the tablet PC and the eReader). With that in mind, the Walt Disney Co. unit announced today that the new channel is all set to showcase some 85 live events this year, including additional content coming from the Summer X Games, NBA games, and college basketball & football.

“ESPN’s commitment to 3D is a win for fans and our business partners,” said ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer. “ESPN 3D marries great content with new technology to enhance the fan’s viewing experience and puts ESPN at the forefront of the next big advance for TV viewing.”

Of course you’ll have to start looking for a 3D-ready TVs and some 3D glasses to suite your nose, in order to watch 3D content. More to it, producing 3D content is not cheap, hence why the viewer will likely get to pay more for all the “fun”. However, after seeing Avatar … some would say it’s worth it!

What’s your take on it? Afterall it’s only sports!
