Next-Gen iPhone to Bring 5 Megapixel Camera

4th-Gen iPhone With Upgraded OmniVision Camera, Availability Rumored for H2 2010

Just adding to the bunch of rumors regarding the new iPhone, we just caught wind that the 4th-gen iPhone model (iPhone 4G, maybe) might be carrying an upgraded 5 megapixel camera. A recent report by our favorite Taiwanese tabloid, Digitimes, reveals that Apple have announced their camera supplier OmniVision Technologies, to replace the 3.2-megapixels CMOS image sensors that are being used today inside the iPhone 3GS, with higher resolution 5-megapixel models.

Although both companies have failed to update anything regarding the rumor, we have all the reasons to believe that Digitimes is on the money this time, too, as the word is that Apple have “secured” an order for double more units than this year — from 20-21 million to 40-45 million for 2010.

The most likely candidate, the new OV5650 sensor should be able to give better images in low light conditions with as little noise as possible, and should be able to deliver 1080p video recording. Of course these are only speculations, so better take it with a pinch of salt before getting too excited.

Meanwhile we’re expecting the 4th-gen iPhone to arrive in the second half of 2010.
