Vodafone Ditches HTC HD2 for the iPhone

Vodafone UK Drops the WinMo 6.5 HD2

Vodafone HTC HD2 Smartphone

Despite the “massive” demand for the new HTC HD2 and the fact that up until now the smartphone has been considered a sales success, out of the blue Vodafone UK  have decided to trade the recently announced Windows Mobile 6.5 handset for Apple’s iPhone. No official statement has been released regarding the HD2 discontinuance,  but if our reports are correct, after only two month of availability on the market, the British mobile carrier is not to restock the high-end HD2 when supplies run out in the very short future.

“With more coming over the next few months, including the iPhone, we’re confident that we continue to offer the broadest range of devices to our customers,” a Vodafone UK spokesman said in a statement today.

Adding to the whole confusion, the HTC HD2 is among the few smartphones that comes with a capacitive multi-touch screen and could actually take on the iPhone. So could that mean that Apple’s condition to distribute the iPhone in the UK (early 2010 that’ its) through Vodafone, was to kill the competition?

There were some issues with the HTC HD2. Sometimes unstable, requiring restarts. The camera had a defect on every unit that put a pink spot in the centre of every photo. Also, it’s a Windows Mobile phone, when the market wants iPhone and Android phones.

The capacitive screen on the HD2 was OK when you’re using the front ‘Sense’ interface that covers over Windows Mobile. But when you eventually had to delve into the Windows Mobile interface, you find that it is unsuitable for touch screen use.

The screen situation got worse with applications. Most of the Windows Mobile apps don’t recognise multi-touch screens, as they were designed to be used with an old fashioned stylus pen.

There are a lot of analysts predicting the end of Windows Mobile in the next year. That would make a lot of unhappy customers who had just bought Windows Mobile phones, only to see them turn into abandoned paperweights with no software available.

There’s an almost identical specification phone coming out in January from HTC, called the HTC Passion. Instead of running Windows Mobile, the Passion runs Android. Vodafone may be clearing its stock of existing phones to make way for the Passion and the next wave of Android phones.
