Seagate Debuts 7mm Momentus 2.5" HDDs

Right after learning that storage giant Seagate has just popped their nose into the solid state drive business, we caught wind that the company has announced a new set of 2.5-inch hard drives meant for those extremely slim notebooks that have got our eyes as of late. Dubbed Seagate Momentus, the high capacity 7mm thin HDDs open up new possibilities for laptop manufacturers trying to make their machines cheaper and as ultraportable as possible, as they can now forget the 9.5-inch models, the expensive SSDs or those 1.8-inch hard drives that lack on performance.
Meant for super-slim portable computing, there’s not much about the upcoming Seagate Momentum hard drives, but if we’re to speculate they might have a single platter design, should spin at 5,400 rpm (although 7,200 rpm would definitely be a really nice bonus) and considering that dual-platter 2.5-inch disks currently max out at 640GB, we’re expecting Seagate to bring up to 320GB of storage.
Interested? Hold your horses till January 5th when the 2010 CES kicks in Las Vegas — that’s when more specs and details are to be announced.
