Verizon Bringing ‘Newer’ Android To Droid Eris [Droid Eris Getting Google Maps Nav in 2010]
Just a few weeks ago, HTC announced it planned to bring Android 2.0 to its Hero phones, and now Verizon is following suit, by confirming and promising that a ‘newer’ version of Android will be brought to the Droid Eris, which of course, people want for the increased e-mail options, oh, and a little thing called Google Maps Navigation.
The HTC Droid Eris is a modified version of the HTC Hero that is carried by Verizon. While the Droid Eris comes standard with Android 1.5, the recently released Android 2.0 has gotten the tech community excited, mainly over the Garmin-killing Google Maps Navigation, an app that adds turn-by-turn directional functionality to the phone.
HTC promised in a Twitter posting some time ago that it was planning to bring Android 2.0 to the Hero line (and leaked pictures even revealed a ‘Android 2.1′ running on a Hero). Verison has only committed to a ‘newer’ verison of Google’s mobile operating system, and Google Maps Navigation. Considering that Google Maps Nav can now run on Android 1.6, it’s entirely possible (although somewhat unlikely) that the Droid Eris could be getting Android 1.6 instead of 2.0 (or the mysterious 2.1 that was leaked).
The only availability information released was that the Android update is coming to Droid Eris users in 2010.
