I bet I am not the only one that has been expecting dual Blu-ray/DVD discs. Although such a product seems like the nestlogical step for the home entertainment business, no studio until now decided to take this approach.

Universal Studio officially announced today that it will start launching dual-format discs which will feature both Blu-ray and DVD versions of a movie on the same disc. To start everything off is that “superspy” thriller trilogy starting Matt Damon. The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum will all be available as individually packaged Blu-ray/DVD discs.

The new dual-discs will let you choose between DVD and Blu-ray format. Whenever you don’t have a Blu-ray player around, the disc is still usable and you can play the DVD version of the movie. Most people haven’t upgraded to Blu-ray yet but they will eventually get there. So why not get discs that have support for both formats?

Craig Kornblau, President of Universal Studios Home Entertainment had this to say about the new “flipper” discs”

Universal’s flipper discs are the perfect way for consumers to future-proof their collections while still enjoying their favorite movies on all their existing DVD players. The flipper disc offers an easy way for viewers to convert to Blu-ray now or at any time in the future, confident in the fact they will be able to experience their home entertainment purchases in the highest quality picture and sound when they do.

Naturally, each title will come with bonus features: top-secret files, challenging strategy games, fascinating filmmakers and actor profiles, commentary and deleted scenes. The movies will be available starting with January 19, 2010, so make sure that you ask Santa for some money for this special Bourne gift coming after the holidays.

Have you switched from DVD to Blu-ray yet?
