Magellan has decided to make a GPS Car Kit of its own for the iPhone and iPod touch and now we have more details about it. In case you don’t want to get the GPS Car Kit offered by TomTom then you could consider Magellan’s offer.
Currently available for pre-order on Amazon, Magellan’s GPS Car Kit retails for $129.99 and it’s expected to ship to your door on December 11. That’s less than two weeks away so if that’s the gadget you were looking for then you should absolutely go for it.
Magellan’s Car Kit is compatible with the iPhone 3G and 3GS and with the iPod touch 2G and 3G. The device also acts as a charger which means your iPhone or iPod won’t use up all the battery juice even when you’re going on longer trips. The built-in GPS receiver should enhance GPS performance and the Car Kit works with any navigation or location-based application. That means you don’t have to necessarily go for Magellan’s RoadMate app if you prefer some other navigation solution instead especially since the app is sold separately for $79.99.
Naturally the Car Kit comes with features like noise-cancelling, hands-free speakerphone with amplified speakers so you’ll be still be able to communicate freely while driving.
Since I did mention Magellan’s RoadMate app for the iPhone, I might as well tell you more about it. Chances are that you might want to go for it once you have acquired the Car Kit. So here are some of the features that the RoadMate app will offer you:
- OneTouch favorites menu
- Spoken street name guidance
- Highway lane assist
- Quickspell
- 3D Landmarks
- Address book integration
- In-app music control
- Find your car
- Pedestrian mode
- NAVTEQ Maps
iPod touch support
So what do you say folks? Are you ready to give Magellan’s GPS Car Kit for the iPhone and iPod touch a try? What about Magellan’s RoadMate app?

Hum, why doesn’t APPLE just bite the bullet and connect with GOOGLE and use their service/app? I’ve seen it and IT IS SWEET! I’d PAY FOR IT before I’d spring $129 on this one!

Probably because Google has it’s own mobile OS and Android is growing more and more popular. Apple will be pressured to upgrade it’s own maps and navigation app.
