Lenovo Wants Its Mobile Phone Company Back

Lenovo was hit hard by the economic recession, and in the face of slumming PC sales worldwide, it sold off its mobile phone branch to some Hong Kong investors. However, after it’s PCs are selling better and the Chinese company wants to reacquire it’s cell phone division.
Lenovo’s sales were doubled last quarter, as they reported a profit of $53 million. Lenovo’s recently notebook offerings have excited the tech community, and with their PC divison doing well, the mothership has made an offer in $200 million (both in cash and Lenovo stock) to reacquire its cell phone division, which it pitched overboard last year for $100 million.
“The Directors now consider that it is appropriate to move aggressively to capture the opportunity in the mobile internet business,” Lenovo said in a statement. Lenovo is no stranger to the popular mobile OS Android, which is coming on one of its upcoming phones.
Although Lenovo Mobile makes high-end notebooks, it’s cell phone offerings have mostly been basic phones thus far. Lenovo handsets are the third most popular in China, and the first most popular brand in China. With Lenovo’s renewed success in the PC market, and it’s phones that will feature Android, one has to wonder if a Lenovo Droid is coming soon.
