Samsung is not the only manufacturer in town busy at work on a new mobile platform. Sony Ericsson also happens to have something interesting for us and although it’s not a standalone OS like Samsung’s bada, the Nexus UX Platform WebSDK for future Android and Symbian Foundation phones is worth checking out.

The beta version of the WebSDK has been announced at the annual Web 2.0 conference in New York. The WebSDK contains a suite of mobile development tools which will help developers create applications for Sony Ericsson’s future Android and Symbian Foundation phones. Developers can already start brainstorming new apps for two of the phones recently announced by Sony Ericsson, the Xperia X10 and the Satio.

Christopher David, Head of Developer and Partner Engagement at Sony Ericsson had this to say about the WebSDK:

With the Sony Ericsson WebSDK our focus is on bringing all the capabilities of web technologies to mobile applications and giving web developers wide access to easy-to-use tools and mobile phone platforms. We are driving this initiative together with the PhoneGap open source community and invite developers to join us as we offer advanced mobile devices and a clear monetization path.

Will we like the new Nexus platform? Well I have a feeling that we will. In case you have followed all the recent buzz around the Xperia X10, Sony Ericsson’s first Android phone, then you have probably noticed two important apps which you’ll find working on top of Android once you purchase the phone. The Timescape and the Mediascape are the apps in question and they are built on that Nexus platform. They are the equivalent of HTC’s Sense UI or Motorola MOTOBLUR interface and you will surely use them in the future.
