We had no idea that the Droid will be as hot as it proved to be. Looking back I will admit that I thought the Sholes, Motorola’s chosen name for the phone that became the Droid, to be an average phone as it is only the second Android phone the company has produced.

But during the last weeks we’ve been able to realize what the Droid really has to offer. And despite the fact that Verizon has already launched the device, and with it a whole Droid line, we keep hearing rumors about it.

The latest rumors say that Verizon has a very bold campaign for the Droid. The company will apparently let users play with some of the largest billboards available in Times Square. We have no details about the whole thing but the campaign is called “DROID Does Times Square”. Users will be able to control the biggest digital billboards available with voice only commands. If you’re living in New York City and plan on getting a Motorola Droid from Verizon then you should definitely try this for yourself whenever it’s possible. The billboards in question are the NASDAQ and the Reuters signs so you’ll should have a lot of fun playing with them. There’s no telling yet what you can do but Verizon will definitely try to suggest that anything can be done with a Droid smartphone running Android OS.

And since we did mention a Droid line we have a piece of hot news for those of you getting an HTC Droid Eris starting with November 6. The price of the handset has been leaked apparently and you’ll be able to get it for $99.99 provided that you get a new 2-year Verizon contract. That’s great news too for those of you that still want a HTC Hero from Sprint. The Hero is available for $179.99 on contract but Sprint might want to rethink that price now that the Droid and the Droid Eris are in town.

In case I didn’t get a chance to ask, I’ll do it now, what will it be? HTC Droid Eris or Motorola Droid?
