iTunes LP

Today, Apple have made a change to their iTunes Store terms and conditions, and somebody with a sharp eye and a lot of time on his hands, discovered something useful after ploughing through all the legal mumbo-jumbo — apparently Apple’s TV 3.0 software update is coming soon. A new paragraph added under the “iTunes LP and iTunes extras’ says that they can only be used with computers running iTunes 9 or higher and Apple TV with software 3.0 or higher.

If the last update for Apple TV was when the “Take Two” 2.0 firmware was released at Macworld Expo in January 2008, the new Apple TV 3.0 is expected to add Snow Leopard features such as QuickTime X and HTTP Live Streaming protocol support.

The iTunes LP format which was released in September allows for the sale of full-length albums and comes with support for additional content such as photos, videos and other bonus material. The iTunes Extras service delivers bonus materials for movies such as those found on DVDs.

There is still no word as to when Apple will release the Apple TV 3.0 software update, but we can patiently wait for it, right?

Whoever caught this has a really good eye! Update: Just checked the Terms of Service myself and looks like Apple removed that paragraph (looks like this info accidentally leaked into their Terms of Service, as soon as they find out they remove it but they may re-introduce it there once Apple V 3.0 comes out.

I hope it does more than just adding iTunes Extras and iTunes LP to Apple TV and adds new useful features to Apple TV for users who don’t have such a large collection of iTunes content. I’d like to see new features like Safari browser for Apple TV, web apps for Apple TV, widgets for Apple TV, an App Store like iPhone App Store modeled for Apple TV; even Pandora Radio channel and On Demand TV features VUDU has. Doubt we’d see On Demand TV, DVR and program guide features on Apple TV (would be nice if Apple did so but looks like they want users to just shop iTunes) but the Pandora Radio channel could perhaps be added sometime in future (whether its in Apple TV 3.0 update or not dunno( but maybe at least that’s possible.

Seeing native apps for Apple TV, web apps for Apple TV, and interactive widgets for Apple TV would be nice. That way Apple TV users can get more use without hacking the Apple TV,.

What I’d like are major new features for Apple TV that users can take advantage of even without buying new iTunes Store content. iPhone OS firmware for iPhone & iPod Touch since 3.0.0 now has Spotlight search (included in Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.0 and higher also — technology was originally developed and integrated before then in iTunes search box) so why not also incorporate Spotlight search via Apple TV. That would be sweet.

So Dashboard for widgets in Apple TV, Spotlight for search, Safari for web apps, and an App Store or App Market for Apple TV with its own native fully developed apps.

The headline says the update is out but the article says the update is coming. Which is it?
