Apple’s App Store is without a doubt one of the most important feature the iPhone has brought to the telecommunication world. Whether you like or hate Apple, you have to admit that the App Store is one of its best products. Apple was first to realize the importance of content when it comes to smartphones and made sure it was the first company to launch such a concept.
All the major players in the business followed soon with their version of the App Store. Microsoft has the Marketplace, Google has the Android Market, Palm has the App Catalog and Nokia has the Ovi Store. Other companies have also come up with an application store or are toying with the idea: T-Mobile, Samsung, Verizon Wireless and more.
But the real winner here is Apple. The App Store is a lot more popular than anything else the competition has to offer while and new applications are added every day. To date the App Store has more than 100,000 apps available for the iPhone. 101,843 apps to be precise! Out of those just about 93,000 have hit the store but that’s still an impressing number. Apple has already hit 2 billion downloads and that number is only going up. About a year ago there were only 10,000 apps available, so who knows where we will be next year at this time?
Sure an application store would be nothing without a hot phone. Apple has the hot phone too and iPhone sales are still going up. Apple has sold over 34 million iPhones already and that number will also be going up. The Cupertino-based company is getting deals with new carriers out there as most exclusivity deals are about to expire.
The only thing that one can hate about the App Store is that Apple has no problem rejecting some apps from the store which we, the consumers, would definitely love. The most famous case is Google’s Google Voice, an app that was banned from the App Store recently. And although the FCC has been investigating the case nobody seemed to be responsible for the rejection.
What about you? Have you purchased your iPhone yet? How many apps are you currently using on your iPhone?

I have all 11 pages on the iPhone full and another 30 apps in iTunes that won’t fit on the phone. I arrange them according to subject, so I have drawing and painting apps on one page, social networking on another, writing and files on another, reference and dictionaries on another, books and e-readers on another etc etc.
iPhone apps have changed my life and contribute positively professionally as an artist as well as providing my primary reading vehicle, crosswords etc for bedtime, checking and replying to mail as soon as I wake up. I love it.
