Xbox Blu-ray Update Rumours Unfounded [No BD Drive For Xbox Planned, Ballmer's Comments Seemingly Misunderstood…Again]

Microsoft Xbox gaming console with crossed out BD logo

You may have read reports recently that seem to suggest that Microsoft’s Xbox console looks set to gain a Blu-ray drive – the reports being based on comments made by MS’s Steve Ballmer – but it now seems that MS are acting to quickly to stem the speculation in claiming that Bellmer’s recent comments have been misunderstood (ah, yes, and not for the first time).

Apparently when Bellmer was talking about a Blu-ray drives as accessories – his specific comment was “Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there – you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.” – he was not talking about the Xbox, as has been widely reported, no sir, but, rather he was referring to Blu-ray drives as accessories for the PC, or at least, according to the Director of Programming for Xbox Live, as reported here.

So there’s no plans for an Xbox BD drive. Period. And indeed, it’s not as if the Xbox actually needs Blu-ray what with the console set to offer Netflix based streaming of Full HD movies in the very near future (at which juncture it’ll be the first console to offer up this feature) allowing Xbox users to rent and watch movies way before they are offered up in BD format.

Seriously, does anyone even care now? Is there anyone out there who wants to play BD discs who hasn’t already availed themselves of ether a dedicated BD player or a PS3 (we opted for the latter as we suspect a vast majority of you have)? Do let us know if you’re going to loose sleep over this, won’t you?
