Volkswagen shows us again why, unlike other car makers, it manages to run a profitable business despite the current economy. The company came up with a totally new advertising solution for their upcoming 2010 GTI. And it’s a brand new, unique and out of the box idea. The new car is officially featured in a game for the iPhone.
Firemint Real Racing is a freeware application which is available in the App Store today. Inside you will find six different 2010 VW GTIs to choose from. You’ll be able to race the GTIs on a special track filled with VW logos but unfortunately these new cars aren’t available inside the regular game.

Will this campaign be successful? Firemint Real Racing has been downloaded more than 70 million times since its initial launch back in June. Everyone that loves cars and has an iPhone will be able to check out the 2010 GTI once they download the game. Everyone that loves VW cars but doesn’t have an iPhone will either get an iPhone (or iPod touch of course) and play the game or they will convince a friend that owns one to let them play the game.
Why should you even go to through all that trouble to play a racing game? It’s just a game right? Wrong! Volkswagen is throwing in a special incentive. You can win one of the six limited-edition black GTI MkVI so this game has just become a lot more interesting. In the following six weeks you can race the 2010 GTIs as much as you want. The best scores are uploaded into an online database and each week the best virtual driver will win one of the six cars available.

The application will also let you send Twitter messages straight from the game and upload videos of your best races to YouTube so you’ll be able to show everyone the race that got you a brand new 2010 VW GTI.
We can’t but applaud Volkswagen’s marketing idea. It’s very bold and very entertaining. The added incentive insures that the 2010 GTI will get the attention it deserves from future potential buyers while VW is saving a lot of money in the process. The 2010 GTI is exclusively presented on Firemint Real Racing which means that you won’t see the car in any other media yet.
