Verizon Wireless & Google Announce Partnership

Android Phones Expected to Arrive in the Following Weeks

I’ll act surprised for a moment and pretend that we were not expecting this move to come through. Verizon Wireless and Google have finally announced that they are willing to work together. Finally! We can expect new Android phones to be available from Big Red at some point in the near future. The first one is supposed to be Motorola’s Droid, previously known as Tao, formerly known as Sholes.

And let’s not forget that today is a very special day, a day dedicated to Windows Mobile 6.5, the newest mobile OS coming from Redmond. What better way to ruin Microsoft’s mood than to announce such a partnership. After all Android has been more and more popular lately and Google’s OS is bound to steal away more and more marketshare from Windows Mobile.

So what exactly does this announced marriage propose? Well it looks like the “partnership will leverage the Verizon Wireless network and the best of the Android(TM) open platform to deliver leading-edge mobile applications, services and devices” so we’re definitely interested to see what mobile phones running Android will be available in Verizon Wireless stores soon.

What’s more interesting is that Verizon Wireless and Google will co-develop various Android phones which will come pre-loaded with “innovative applications from both parties as well as third-party developers.” Shall we assume that Google’s Android Market and all the application available in the store will be available on future Verizon Wireless Android phones? Or does Verizon has something really different in mind?

We’ll see how this whole partnership will work out really soon. The Droid from Motorola is expected to be available in Verizon Wireless stores starting with October 30 and hopefully more phones will follow. The press release clearly mentioned that Verizon Wireless will bring Android phones from leading handsets manufacturers. HTC, Samsung and LG will definitely be more than happy to hear they have 87.7 million new potential buyers to pitch Android phones to.

What Android phone would you love to see in Sprint’s inventory? Not to be disrespectful to Motorola’s Droid but I bet that the leaked HTC Dragon smartphone, possibly the flagship Android phone of HTC, would make some of Verizon’s subscribers more than happy!
