Although not renowned for offering many free products, Microsoft has announced that starting today their free antivirus software has become available for download. Officially introduced last year when it was supposed to substitute the paid Windows Live OneCare and a superset of Windows Defender, the beta version of Microsoft Security Essentials made its debut to a select group of testers this June, and now after getting things straight, the application makes its way to the general public.
A recent report by AV-Test.org, showed that Microsoft Security Essentials (also known as Morro) is capable of detecting 97.8 percentage of malware infections on a computer. Although it’s not something to brag with, nowadays, when users demand foolproof solutions for their important date, Microsoft’s free antivirus managed to secure the fourth place in a recent report by PCWorld.
Meant for home use, the new Microsoft Security Essentials will be available for download to any Windows XP, Windows Vista or Windows 7 user.
Although Microsoft is expected to tackle the scanning speed and maybe some resource issues in there (for those with less RAM and older processors), the new Security Essentials certainly looks like a powerful new addition to the market.
