The original TG01 ran on the archaic Windows Mobile 6.1 and was not much to call home about. Windows Mobile 6.5, releasing on October 6th is supposedly much faster and smoother than its previous versions and Microsoft is dubbing any phone running 6.5, a Windows Phone. That’s the case with Toshiba, who have just announced their new TG01 Windows Phone, with the same hardware but running on Windows Mobile 6.5
When it released back in July, Toshiba TG01 touted very good specs but was let down by its less-than-satisfactory OS. But with a massive 4.1” WVGA touchscreen, measuring 129×70x9.9 mm in size, and weighing 129 grams, it’s quite a handful. It runs on a 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor that is claimed to be much faster than any other competing smartphones. Other features include a 3.2-megapixel camera, Wi-Fi and HSPDA 3G connectivity.
Existing users of the TG01 need not be disappointed as Toshiba is providing a free OS upgrade to Windows Mobile 6.5 for its existing customers.
It will be interesting to see what difference the new OS brings to the handset. So far, all we know is that the Toshiba TG01 Windows Phone will go on sale across Europe on October 6th, and shouldn’t come in cheap.
