So you’re in the market for an affordably priced well-stocked notebook PC with an integrated Blu-ray player. Aren’t we all. Well, the folks at Samsung, makers of a wide range of laptops that just might fit the bill have announced the launch of one of their latest creations, the Samsung R620 laptop computer. It is one of the cheapest laptops on the market to sport an integrated Blu-ray player and just might be one of the most well made in its category.
The Samsung R620 is an affordable 16-in media center laptop that offers a host of features that have (until recently) only been available in more expensive models. It features an integrated Blu-ray player and while the screen isn’t sharp enough to take full advantage of Full HD movies it has an HDMI-out port so you can jack into a high-definition TV.
The 16-inch screen features the same 16:9 aspect ratio as most of the other laptops in its class natively supporting the latest films but also losing out on vertical pixels. The 1366 x 768 pixel resolution is nothing to write home about for a screen of this size, but other tech reviews of the product have noted that the images are reasonably detailed nonetheless.
The keyboard is nearly identical in style to the previous generation of Sony VAIOs. The integrated touchpad features stylish blue lighting around the edges of the pad that helps to give the machine a distinctive appearance. Strong performance is offered by the 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor, which is supported by 3GB of memory and an estimated 4-hours of battery life. A 320GB HDD rounds out the package. Graphics performance is lead by the capable ATi Mobility Radeon HD 4330 graphics card, which may have some difficulty with most new games.
The Samsung R620 is a solid contender in the sub-$1,500 laptop category given its laundry list of welcome features, most notably the integrated Blu-ray player. It is clearly targeted at the cost-conscious multi-media user and should quickly find a welcome home within its demographic. The Samsung R629 is available now and retails for about $1,100.
