How many times have you been out sightseeing, randomly snapping pictures of just about everything you come across only to be stumped later that night when you’re flipping through the pictures. Where in the hell was I when I took that picture of that little white dog sitting outside the fondue shop? Well, if you had the latest digital camera from Samsung, the ST1000 with integrated GPS, it would have told you that it was in Lucerne. What it won’t tell you is why you took the picture.
Samsung has announced the release of what it is claiming is the world’s first point-and-shoot digital camera to integrate the “big three” wireless technologies of Bluetooth, wi-fi, and DLNA. OK, so the new 12.2-Mp ST1000 features wireless technology and Bluetooth connectivity. Those are both cool, we get it. Now for the killer part. This thing has built-in geo-mapping technology. I guess the idea is that you can take a picture, send it wirelessly to someone and it will mark where and when the image was taken.
The integrated GPS system of the Samsung ST1000 also sports the ability to display the city and region of your last shot right on the 3.5-in LCD display screen. This should come in handy when you pull an all-night drunk fest and you just happen to get a bit snap-happy in the process. As previously mentioned, the ST1000 has both Bluetooth and wi-fi capabilities. Along with this, it’s also DLNA compliant (Digital Living Network Alliance), so users can wirelessly connect it to other DLNA compliant devices, like digital picture frames, media servers or gaming HDTVs.
The Samsung ST1000 digital camera also features HD movie recording at 720p resolution and 30 frames per second in H.264 format. It can also be connected to an HDMI interface with an optional adapter. Expected to go on sale later this month, the Samsung ST1000 is certainly a gadget for those that need their camera to do more than just take pictures. And while it won’t tell you where you’re going, it can tell you where you’ve been…sorta. No word on pricing yet, but we do know that it will be available in several colors. Oh, joy.
