Computers made for harsh environments have left the military arena and are headed into the mainstream. Places that aren’t typically friendly to laptops like construction zones and chemical plants have high-tech needs, too, and a growing number of companies are attempting to fill this need. The latest product offering from Stealth Computers, the Stealth NW-2000, is one badass portable computer with looks that will dare you to try and hurt it.
The latest notebook from Stealth, the NW-2000, is an ultra-rugged hybrid laptop/tablet based around Intel’s 1.06GHz Core 2 Duo. Just one look at this thing and you’ll feel more like a man. It is practically built like a tank. It features a 13.3-inch sunlight viewable resistive touchscreen and MIL-STD-810F, shock & vibration compliance. I have always been one to baby my electronics, but this one might need to be tossed off the table just for good measure.
The Stealth NW-2000 also sports a respectable 2GB of RAM (upgradeable to 4GB), a 160GB shock-mounted hard-drive or optional SSD, and a spill-resistant keyboard. According to the manufacturer, the Stealth NW-2000 can handle a drop from 91cm (that’s about three feet) onto a wood-covered concrete surface 26 times in a row and still function. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. Sounds too good to be true. Also makes one wonder what their replacement policy is.
The Stealth NW-2000 is one tough cookie. It looks great and you would probably be hard pressed to find one that can put up with more. Not only can you beat the hell out of it and spill your coffee on its keyboard, but it’s pretty full-featured as well. You also get standard WiFi a/g/n, Bluetooth, gigabit ethernet and GPS, with optional HSDPA, a DVD burner, PC card slot, fingerprint scanner and TPM security module. The Stealth NW-2000 is available to order now for $4,895 at www.stealthcomputer.com.
