Hitachi Launches Deskstar 7K2000 World’s First 2TB 7200RPM HDD [High-Performance, Eco-Friendly Design For the Masses]

When it comes to digital storage it seems that big is never enough. Consumers are storing massive amounts of information and the size of high-definition movies and high-quality audio tracks are eating up megabytes like they are going out of style. The latest hard drive offering from the people at Hitachi is sure to be a hit. The Stardesk 7K2000 is the world’s first 7200 RPM HDD to sport a 2TB capacity.

Available for the first time to the mass market, the 2TB Deskstar 7K2000 combines high performance and high capacity with low power and other eco-friendly features. The DeskstarTM 7K2000 hard drive delivers a colossal two terabytes of storage capacity and 7200 RPM performance in a standard 3.5-inch form factor. The 7K2000 is based on Hitachi’s fourth-generation mechanical design platform that is known for its durability and robust features.

Through a patented ramp load/unload design, data heads are moved to a ramp away from the disk where they rest during periods of inactivity. This greatly minimizes the risk of shock damage by eliminating direct contact between the heads and disks, reducing wear and heat while improving overall drive reliability and power efficiency. The Deskstar 7K2000 also incorporates thermal fly-height control (TFC) technology which uses an integrated heating element to precisely maintain a constant fly-height throughout read and write operations to enhance overall data integrity, drive performance and reliability.

The Deskstar 7K2000 also offers up some great eco-friendly tid-bits, with idle power savings over previous generation products up to 10%. According to Hitachi, on a watts per gigabyte basis, idle power of the 7K2000 has improved over 120%. There is no word yet on how much the new Deskstar model will cost consumers, but it’s a safe bet that those in need of such speedy high-capacity storage will pay whatever it takes.
