2tb sony memory stick xc series

Sony is trying to get back in the game with an insane new memory card. Announced during CES this spring, full specifications concerning Sony’s Memory Stick XC (Extended High Capacity) series have just announced. The backwards-compatible 2TB Memory Stick XC keeps the current form factor for memory sticks, includes Memory Stick Duo, Micro and Pro variants, makes use of the much more efficient exFAT file system and claims increased maximum transfer speeds.

As appearing on Sony’s oss-formats.org site, the Memory Stick XC offers up to 160 Mbps data transfer rates in 4-bit parallel for XC Duo and XC-HG Du, and up to 480 Mbps in 8-bit parallel for the XC Micro (M2 XC) and the XC-HG Micro (M2 XC-HG).

One last thing that we really need to mention is that the new Sony Memory Stick XC series do indeed come with up to 2TB maximum capacity but that doesn’t mean that a 2TB version will be available soon on the market. More like 64GB, 128GB, 256GB and so on, in the near future …

And although the implications for devices like netbooks and SSDs could be huge, we don’t even want to imagine what a 2TB Sony Memory Stick XC would sell for.
