Navigon Debuts New 8410 in Europe [5-in Display, Brushed Steel Case, Portable GPS Navigator]

When it comes to portable GPS devices, there isn’t much that separates the competition. They all offer larger screens, expandable memory, updatable map files, and the typical video game like graphics. All of this and its usually wrapped up in a nice little black plastic frame, too. Wouldn’t it be nice if a company actually came out with a GPS unit that got our attention? It’s too bad that Navigon stopped doing business in the States, because their new Navigon 8410 had us doing a double take.

The new Navigon 8410 is part of the premium product line of personal navigation devices being offered by Navigon. I think that the main reason for this new moniker is the stylish brushed steel case that this thing is sporting. It just looks like it should be inside a Porsche.

The Navigon 8410 has a more than adequate 5-inch display for viewing its photo-realistic maps (limited European cities only) and television programs. Television, you ask? Yeah, that’s an interesting add-on for a GPS. Navigon is offering an additional DVB-T receiver for this package that allows users to turn their PND into a portable TV set. I’m not sure who’s driving around watching TV, but I need to know so I can stay away from them.

Other bells and whistles found in the 8410 include a TMC receiver, which can be used for enjoying information regarding the incoming traffic, as well as a voice command system for true hands-free operation. The Navigon 8410 retails for around 449EUR ($640). If you want the added DVB-T capabilities it’ll cost an extra $60.
