Intel is rumoured to be working on the largest 320GB solid state drive till date and the release has been confirmed for August. Expected to be cheaper and to deliver higher performance, the new Intel 320GB Postville SSDs have been moved to a smaller process technology that allows for higher capacities and much better speeds

The 320GB Postville SSDs are built on 34nm technology unlike the current models (X18-M, X25-M and the X25-E) that use 2bits per cell multi-level cell (MLC) technology and are built on a 50nm process for the M series and single-level cell (SLC – one bit per cell) technology — which makes them a bit faster, for the E series.

Aimed at both consumer and mobile PCs, and workstation and server segments, the new Intel drives will be available in 80GB, 160GB and 320GB version, are Halogen free, offer AES 128-bit encryption and a 32MB wear leveling buffer with 90MB/s sequential write speeds.

There’s no official word from Intel regarding the price or an exact release date, but word is that 80GB modelswill be priced between $260 and $270, while the 160 GB version should cost almost double.
