Sony have introduced their next generation multi-function DVDirect DVD recorder/burner, the Sony DVDirect VDR-MC6, which offers standalone functionality allowing end users to burn films (inclusive of 1080i HD video footage) and digital photos directly to DVDs from cameras and camcorders without the need to fire up their PC.

The Sony DVDirect VDR-MC6 DVD Recorder, which offers a notably smaller footprint than its predecessor, additionally sports a larger 2.7″ color LCD display allowing users tom preview video or up to six digital photos and, according to Sony’s press release, offers compatibility with ‘virtually any’ camcorder, digital camera and VCR whilst being capable of burning 1080i HD footage to DVD directly from Sony’s Memory Stick media-based Handycam camcorders whilst burning standard definition video from other camcorders. And, thanks to offering AVCHD support, the resulting DVDs will happily play on compatible Blue-ray drives which, incidentally, include the Sony PS3.

Sporting Digital Video (i.LINK/FireWire), composite and USB inputs, the Sony DVDirect VDR-MC6 DVD Recorder is set to begin shipping from September and will come in at around $230.
