Go Computer Targets Elderly Nerds [Old-Folks Friendly PC with 200% Zoom Mouse]

Unlike the folks at Go Computer (a division of FirstStreet, makers of gadgets for the near-geriatric), I think that designing and marketing a computer that is specifically meant for older people (anyone over 65 I suppose) is somewhat of a shot in the dark. I liken it to making a blind-friendly high-definition digital camera that prints out Braille descriptions of the images; interesting concept but highly unlikely that it will ever take off. Then again, there is that JitterBug phone out there. So what exactly does the Go Computer have to offer the tech-savvy senior set?
If you listen to the marketing spiel on the Go Computer website, the thing is right up there with the Jarvik Heart. After all, they refer to it as a technological marvel. But maybe my view is a tad myopic. Maybe seniors will care and the Go Computer will tear them away from their Matlock and Wheel of Fortune long enough to email their families and research bridge strategies. Here is a smattering of its features:
- Designed by MyGait with over eight years of consulting with seniors in retirement communities
- Easy-to-see, large-letter keyboard
- Ergonomic, one-click rollerball mouse
- Glare-proof screen
- Zoom magnification up to 200%, on a high contrast 19″ screen for both email and most websites without loss of resolution.
- 24/7 U.S.A.-based monitoring and maintenance
There aren’t any specs on what’s inside of the box so I can’t share info on processor speed, HD capacity, and the like. Maybe their target market isn’t into that. I’m not exactly sure what operating system they’re using, but their press release claims that it’s “failure free, fear free, and worry free”. Maybe they should consult with Bill Gates for the next Windows release.
The monthly monitoring fee will run you $19.95 so there are ongoing costs associated with the unit. The base unit is $799 and has everything you need to get up and running (or rolling) right out of the box. I recommend a knitted cozy and pill dispenser as future accessories.
